Stained Glass Window
Duplication done during the early fall of 1996 for The CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL
HELP in St. Thomas of the Virgin Islands One of their two (2) beautiful "FX ZETTLER" windows from circa 1920 was destroyed in its entirety and the other was subject to some glass breakage from the effects of Hurricane Hugo. The skilled craftsmen and artists at The Baut Studios were able to reproduce a new window with the aid of an old photograph. Baut also restored the storm damaged window with painted glass pieces which are exact duplications. |
|
The
artists at THE BAUT STUDIOS created a full size cartoon of the destroyed
Mary window from an existing photograph. Once the cartoon was created, a
full size assembly drawing was generated featuring the actual glass subdivisions.
An additional copy of the drawing was cut apart to make patterns for cutting
the glass. These drawings were drawn by hand and partly by computer.

The face was painted using the cartoon
as a guide. Note the trace painting, shading and staining used to attain
the beautiful duplication. Raw colored glass was selected and cut into the different shapes using the patterns and assembly drawing. All the glass was test fired for assurance of color and paint application. |
|
Tracery
paint was hand applied and the glass was fired. Then shading was applied
by hand & airbrush and then worked with brush techniques to create a
subtle, soft and realistic look to the image.

The existing damaged Christ window was
used as a control for matching the glass, paint formulations and background
patterns. In this image all the glass has been painted, shaded and stained as necessary and is layed out on a light up table awaiting assembly. This window was assembled using lead cames and time honored techniques. |

The new window reproduction is so exact to the original work, that one cannot tell the difference; thus, a beautiful piece of "ART HISTORY" has been saved from oblivion. |
